Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect from a pilates session?

You kow when you have had a great session when you feel as though your body has been massaged from the inside out. You feel refreshed and invigorated.

What can I expect from pilates?

As you become more proficient in the pilates method you will aquire greater effiecncy of movement throughout your day. You will feel better as your muscles work more effiecntly, and look better as you gain strength and length to your muscle structure - your posutre will improve. With these changes your sense of self improves.

How often should I practice pilates?

If you can, practice pilates 4 times per week for maximum benefit. This could be a combination of private, group and at home practice. I practice for 30 minutes everyday, and this helps me to move easily through my week.

The reason I write to you is that I have a question about something you wrote in your bio:

"After accelerating my career in Pilates, the development of a bulging disc in my lumbar spine (between L5 and S1) prompted me to completely re-evaluate what I have learned and current training methods."

I am not sure if I understand correctly but were you taught something wrong in the Stott method or something I should be aware of beforehand?

A lot of pilates based exercise is flexion focused with rotation....  Flexing and rotating the spine under load can make a disc bulge problem much worse.  All pilates schools teach exercises that include flexing and rotating the spine under load.  I choose now not to teach a lot of these exercises because so many people have problems with their spines.....

I also re-evaluated how I teach in terms of holding the weight of people’s legs in my hands (I do not do this now), and I avoid flexing forward for any of my tactile cues.  There are many small things within the pilates method that I alter slightly depending on client needs....  I have a very different attitude to how I teach clients and also how to evaluate their needs.  Within my courses,  I coach teachers how to move efficiently when teaching pilates with correct posture and without loading your own spine when working with clients and changing equipment settings.

Stott is a great school and I loved their course and was happy with it at that time in my life. There are many excellent courses and teachers out there. My advice is to book in a session with the teacher trainer and see if you get a good feeling from the quality of their teaching.

My back injury was probably caused by my years of dance training and then working as a contemporary dancer, not my pilates training.... In fact I do pilates exercises everyday to maintain strength through my torso, but without loading my spine, or flexing and rotating.
